Personal Description:

I am currently a fourth year biochemist at Lady Margaret Hall Oxford. My 5 major first year courses were Organic Chemistry, Biophysical Chemistry, Biological Chemistry, Molecular Cell Biology, and Mathematics and Statistics. I completed my International Baccalaureate in 2014 receiving 43/45 points, and 7/7 in all subjects except Standard English Language and Literature. I took Higher Level (A-level equivalent) Maths, Physics, and Chemistry and Standard Level (AS-level equivalent) Geography, English, and French. I am originally from Belgium but have been educated in English for the past 8 years.

Tutoring Experience:

I have tutored students in Maths, Physics and Chemistry for the IGCSE when I was completing my final 2 years of school. I used to run one on one sessions as well as group sessions for up to 4 students. I really enjoyed working with students of all ages, but mainly worked with students aged 14-18.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach varies depending on the student’s needs and learning style. However I do push students to think independently. I start with topics that the students are fairly comfortable with progressing slowly to new and more complex areas as their understanding grows. I tend to use past exam paper questions on a particular topic to check understanding as we're going through the topic.I try to use real life examples as often as possible to help contextualize and to help students be able to visualize more abstract concepts.

I usually focus on exam-style or past paper questions in order to check, practice and perfect the student’s understanding and technique. Once the understanding of a concept is there, I then shift my focus to exam technique, what to look for in exam questions, and how to start tackling the more challenging questions. I believe that a clear and systematic approach is essential when tacking exams particularly in the sciences.
