Allison

An experienced PGCE primary teacher of 12 years with a vast knowledge teaching Reception, Key Stage 1 and 2 covering all areas of Foundation and National Curriculum, particularly Phonics and Literacy. Due to COVID, I enjoy helping children to recap/reiterate skills to ensure they progress in their learning.
Prior to 2009, I lived in Yorkshire and began my Education career (1999) as a Learning Support Assistant working with children with Dyspraxia. I developed my career path and completed BEd (Hons) part time while working in a school setting. This led me to study for QTS in 2008-2009 and moving to Northumberland with my husband and 2 children.
In 2021, I took on a new role as Education Officer with Northumberland Country Zoo where I am currently employed.
I have had a varied career including banking, finance, insurance and self-employment.
I enjoy exploring the North East, reading, socialising and I am a keen member of the community where I live.

Tutoring Experience

NQT - supply teaching in Northumberland first schools. I taught in all areas of the curriculum to children reception, Key Stage 1 and lower Key Stage 2.

QTS - Teaching 2010-2021 in same first school. Initially I taught in Key Stage 1 and for 8 years in reception class. I taught skills in all Foundation subjects, including phonics and literacy. I researched about Planning in the Moment and introduced this method of learning to the Early Years team. As the Beach School practitioner, I taught all age groups new skills and attributes in a different environment from classroom learning.
As Humanities Co ordinator I was responsible for the training, planning and development for history and geography and how that worked alongside the rest of the curriculum.
During and following Covid times, I taught in lower Key Stage 2 with years 3 and 4. This was difficult times for children to settle emotionally and socially back to school life. This has meant that some children lack in confidence in English and Mathematics requiring greater understanding of phonics and number. I believe that 'back to basics' is a good starting point.

Tutoring Approach

Years of teaching has taught me that a happy environment is key to childrens' success. I have gained a solid understanding of Early Years Foundation Stage and National Curriculum including expectations required.
I have a 'firm but fair' approach in my management skills and I believe that there should be mutual respect in order to achieve the required goal. I am enthusiastic, persevere with a calm attitude and keen to celebrate the child's success.
