Personal Description:

I’m a 23 year old graduate from the University of East Anglia holding a first class Master’s degree in Chemistry (MChem). Over the past four years of studying Chemistry at degree level, I’ve developed a real interest in how Chemistry – and more generally science – is taught. This translated into tutoring undergraduates during my final two years. Outside of academic work I’m also a keen photographer and climber.

Tutoring Experience:

I have experience in mentoring younger university students during my final two years at university, helping them gain core skills and knowledge during their first and second years that would allow them to undertaken successful final year projects and dissertations. This experience have me an opportunity to fine tune my tutoring skills and an insight into how a solid understanding of the basics is vital when tackling more advanced topics.

Examples of previous experience include tutoring physical chemistry to a group of 1st year chemists and helping a foreign exchange student gain the maths skills required to complete their 2nd year.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach is not to emulate the school classroom but to use my extensive experience to give context and meaning to the pupil’s studies and allow them create their own interest in the subject. Attending small group tutorials at university has given me an appreciation for how one-on-one learning can enhance the students understanding through a more relaxed and conversational atmosphere.

As a result of this freedom, the pupil is encouraged to work through their own questions, to not be afraid of asking questions they might think of as stupid, and to enjoy the subject.

Crucial to my approach is to promote a solid understanding of the fundamentals. As this is often the most challenging material, the advantage of a tutor is the ability to spend more time than a normal school lesson can to provide a solid grounding in the subject for future success.
