Hammersmith Tutor

Professional GCSE-SPECIALIST tutor based in Central London, over 1,000 hours experience

My name is Alistair and I am a 4th-Year medical student at Imperial College London.

Prior to university, I attended a selective state-boarding school called Cranbrook School, situated in the south-east of England where I took my GCSEs (8A*s, 5As) and my A-Level exams (5As at AS; 2A*s and 1A at A2). From Cranbrook, I then went onto read medicine at Imperial College London, often ranked in the top-five medical schools in the world.

Whilst at Imperial, I have gained a distinction in pre-clinical medicine (ranking in the top 10% of the medical school) and have been elected to be the 2018/2019 Academic Chair of the medical school's student union (~1800 students). I am currently doing an intercalated bachelors degree in Management with the Imperial Business School.

The majority of my time tutoring (>90%) has been with GCSE science and maths students and although I have successfully tutored A-level students in the past, I decided to fully commit to specialising in GCSE tuition. This has enabled me to be more astute to the nuances of the GCSE subject-matter, often having covered the same topics with different tutees and thus having evolved the best way to deliver the teaching.

Tutoring Experience

Over the past 4 years I have been an active tutor to 3 or more students a week (from a range of backgrounds including students from Latymer Upper and Ampleforth College), totalling over 1,000 hours of tutoring.

With so much experience in one-on-one tutoring, I have honed many ways that help students develop their education, including an array of revision techniques specific to GCSEs. With many students at GCSE having never revised for multiple exams with large swathes of content to cover at the same time, the concept of revision is often foreign and one that students don't fully understand. Because of this, I strive to empower and provide the tutee with the means throughout the tutoring pathway to discover the best unique techniques for revision.

Having been in the position of many of my students within the past 3-6 years enables me to accurately teach information and caveats that are vital for exams that many older tutors simply do not know about with the new style of exams being introduced into the UK.

Previous experience teaching fellow students in the sciences and maths whilst living at my boarding house and in being a counsellor in America for three months doing full time activity leading with children, developed my skills in efficient communication.

Tutoring Approach

In the initial session, I will establish the tutees needs and tailor a program in which to progress from so that the tutee can gain the most from the tutoring.

Tutoring is a valuable accompaniment to any learning done in the school environment and lends to consolidate information in a one-to-one setting. In this, I aim not only to educate the student but to promote self-directed learning with enthusiastic teaching to promote the skills needed in later life and at university.

Many students find revision and knowledge consolidation some of the hardest skills to master, but along the tutoring pathway, I aim to continually re-examine and enable the student as best as possible with various revision aids such as flash cards. It is through this that I help my tutees acquire and retain knowledge as best as possible. I also value the use of past papers and example questions to provide an early application of learned knowledge however a strong base in the curriculum is required in my eyes to do well in exams which will be focused on.

Note about online-tuition I do NOT offer online tutoring as I feel the tutee can really gain ideas quicker and more efficiently in a more engaging environment with myself so I do not tend to offer online sessions.
