Llanfyllin Tutor

After more than 30 years of teaching children with special educational needs, I still remain passionate about helping children increase their confidence and desire to learn through success. I enjoy art, drama, outdoor sports, gardening and we have a variety of animals at home.
I am currently studying part time for my masters in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, and use both this and mindfulness, as appropriate and as requested, to improve outcomes.
As a mum of two teenagers, I enjoy their company immensely but also appreciate how difficult it can be to find that extra study time at home, which is why I initially became interested in tutoring.

Tutoring Experience

I am currently working as a primary teacher, although have worked in both mainstream and special secondary schools ( including as a specialist tutor in an outstanding academy), but my passion is helping those learners who are underachieving. As Special Educational Needs Coordinator in secondary, primary and special schools, I have over 30 years experience in improving outcomes for learners with a variety of additional needs such as 'dyslexia ( e.g. increasing 10 reading bands in 6 weeks)'; ADHD, attachment issues; emotional/ behavioural issues or who are on the ASD spectrum, by improving confidence whilst having a lot of fun!
A headteacher for 3 specialist provisions, I have now returned to the classroom to lose the bureaucracy and make a difference to children directly again! And I'm loving it!

Tutoring Approach

Empathy, professionalism, understanding (of the subject, learning process and the needs of each learner), a sense of humour and high expectations characterise my approach to learning. By modelling what I expect to see, I give each student my total focus, setting specific, achievable targets for each lesson, so that they can reflect on their quick rate of progress, building their confidence and skills to achieve their goals.
