Private English and French Tutor in Norwich

I am an experienced teacher with a passion for my subjects and a wide range of personal interests which allow me to relate to both young people and adult learners. I read widely and also write my own short stories, and am currently working on a screenplay for a feature film. I am very much in touch with contemporary culture and take an eclectic approach to the texts and examples I use in my teaching to make the tutoring experience enjoyable as well as beneficial.

Tutoring Experience

I have over twenty years' experience teaching in high schools and sixth form colleges, as well as EFL / ESOL experience. During that time I have had excellent pass rates (100% for ten years in English and Creative Writing A-levels, and six years of good results in A-level Psychology) and have developed a wide range of skills to help students achieve their full potential. I have worked with students with all kinds of individual learning needs including ASD and dyslexia and am able to help them to find strategies which maximise their progress.

Tutoring Approach

I believe that private tuition is an opportunity to spend more time than a busy classroom teacher is often able to in identifying the learner's individual strengths and weaknesses. I start with looking at the work the student is doing already, to diagnose any problems that may be holding them back, whether this be understanding of the subject matter, essay structure, grammar, spelling or punctuation. Using this plus the specification for the exam being taken, I then develop personalised plans and materials to help them make better progress. I advise on note-taking and revision strategies to help students feel in control of the material they need to learn.
I know from all my experience that learning works best when it is fun, so I bring in texts that will appeal to the student's interests and add a touch of humour wherever possible.
