I am an environmental scientist with many years of academic learning combined with real-world consultancy. I enjoy applying the knowledge gained from the theoretical background and applying it to real problems. Currently I specialise in the application of satellite imagery to providing solutions to companies such as water utilities, agriculture, and natural conservation agencies. This consultancy requires a broad knowledge base with robust problem solving skills. These play a significant role in my tutoring, as geography encompasses many disciplines (e.g. ecology, sociology, physics) but require sound analytical capabilities.
Geography is a fantastic subject to teach as it is so diverse there are many ways that it can be made relevant and engaging! It is also very relevant today in a world where natural resources and social interests are under increasing strain.
I was a teacher and student mentor at Aberystwyth University for 3 years, tutoring both undergraduate and postgraduate students. This was for large classes (up to 100) through to one-on-one mentoring and tuition support. I assisted and mentored a number of students through their dissertations and other course work. Students were welcome to come to me for any assistance during the year and I enjoyed helping many from one off requests to full project guidance.
Every student is different but I prefer to understand what the student enjoys about the subject and tailoring this interest towards their current objectives. Geography is a great subject for this due to the many disciplines it captures and variety of approaches that can be applied to learning. I enjoy finding the solution that is most engaging as this make the learning and tuition easier and more rewarding.
