Personal Description:

Hi, I'm Alice! I am offering language tutoring in French, German and English for all ages, including GSCE and A level. Having focussed on European literary studies throughout my time at university, I can also help you to improve skills such your ability to approach texts critically, apply contextual knowledge appropriately and write clearly and coherently in an academic style. Mastering such skills is essential to reaching the higher grades in many subjects and something which I take very seriously as it is integral to effective communication in general.

A little about me: I am currently studying for a Master of Philosophy in French at St Hugh’s College, Oxford. For my thesis I am focussing on the French Romantic period and the role of popular comedy within it.

I graduated from the University of Bristol with a First-class honours in French and German in 2017. While studying French and German, I studied a wide range of periods, writers and thinkers. For my BA dissertation, I studied works by French Existentialists to produce a paper entitled '"Sur les lèvres, le goût incomparable": The Mouth and Embodied Subjectivity in Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir'. As part of my studies, I also lived for a time in the South of France and in Berlin, where I made life long friends.

I can assist in all foundational parts of language learning (grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, verbal expression and aural comprehension) as well as provide comprehensive insight into French and German history, literature and thought from the Renaissance to the present day. This kind of knowledge would be particularly advantageous for those who are are considering studying languages or cultural studies for A level or at university.

Tutoring Experience:

In 2014 I was a teaching assistant in French and German at Fairfield High School in Bristol as part of the Routes into Languages programme, which aims to promote the up-take of modern languages at university. I helped individual students prepare for their GSCE oral exams as well as assist in classroom activities. I worked with students aged 11 - 16 and found that they were very responsive to my approachable and attentive teaching style, especially when working one-on-one on tasks they found challenging.

Tutoring Approach:

I am an enthusiastic and receptive individual who strives above all to find imaginative ways to best fit her students’ needs and interests. I want my students to leave me feeling confident in the fact that they have acquired skills that they can readily apply in other contexts. Teaching is about empowerment, and to be empowered is not to be limited to one approach or one way of thinking. The ability to think outside the box will take you far in life. I aim therefore to foster this mindset while tutoring by not only helping you to improve school-work and exam technique but by also providing tasks that push you beyond your current level in other ways.
