I am an experienced teacher offering private tuition in English and other humanities subjects. I have taught English to GCSE and A level, and Philosophy and English in universities and colleges. I'm also a published author with considerable experience in journalism.
Having run a busy home-based tuition practice in south London since 2010, I now live in Bradford-on-Avon, where I continue to tutor from my cottage in Woolley.
I spent two years in a secondary school, teaching English at all levels from 11 to 18, including Oxbridge entrance, and then taught GCSE English in further education. I have nearly a decade's experience in higher education, lecturing in Philosophy and Critical Thinking. Along the way, I have also taught English as a Foreign Language and English for Academic Purposes to both groups and individuals.
An experienced private tutor, I am familiar with the requirements of the main exam boards. My broad teaching background makes me well-placed to support anyone needing to improve their writing skills for professional or personal reasons.
It's generally acknowledged that one-to-one teaching is a good way of promoting learning, but the key to making it really effective is tailoring tuition to the student's needs. Whether it's a matter of remedying gaps in knowledge or fast-tracking a bright pupil, my approach combines academic rigour with genuine attention to the individual.
I aim to provide a thorough grounding in the subject, as well as developing the techniques needed for success in coursework and exams.
As a published writer with a background in secondary, higher and further education, I'm well-equipped to motivate students, showing them how the skills they are acquiring now will help them to realise their potential in future.
An initial meeting with a student (and parent, if appropriate) to discuss the student's needs is free of charge.
