Personal Description:

I finished my A levels in the summer of 2015, receiving an A*, A and B in English Language, English Literature and Sociology. Now, I am enrolled at The University of East Anglia: rated the 12th best University in the Complete University Guide, and highly commended for Literature and creative writing. In my second year, I averaged on 71 (a first), studying American Literature with Creative Writing. I have just completed my third year as an exchange student at Middlebury College in America (a mini Ivy League), receiving a 3.92 GPA (out of 4.00). I have a fourth year remaining until my degree is complete; I am available to work from September onwards.

English has always been, and remains to be, my favourite subject. I am passionate about learning and studying both Language and Literature, it`s been this which has pushed me to succeed and inspired me to tutor other pupils going through the same processes I have recently completed. As it has not been long since I have sat exams, and since I am still in education, I am very aware of the criteria needed for good grades and what examiners look for when marking. My familiarity with mark schemes is particularly with AQA.
After progressing with my achievements at university, I have also learnt more general writing skills that are relevant for anyone wanting to write a good quality essay or text. The most valuable lesson that university has taught me so far is how to structure an essay around my own abilities, and present it uniquely with personal flair.

Tutoring Experience:

During my A levels I hosted two Creative Writing Classes for all Secondary School students from 11-18 years old. I encouraged them to practice their skills, taught them about different genres of writing and marked their work - providing them with constructive criticism and feedback. I am proud to say that this soon became a very popular class!

Within this time period I also began mentoring some SixthForm pupils who were taking the same subjects as me. This included showing them examples of my work and going through their own. We would also discuss the subject, and focus on the topics they struggled to understand.

For most of my years as a student I worked as a child carer within Stantonbury KidsClub. Accordingly, I have attained an up to date DBS (previously known as a CRB). This is a holiday playscheme which childminds children whilst also entertaining them with leisure activities.

Tutoring Approach:

My overall approach to tutoring heavily relies on strong communication skills, as I believe that any student can receive top grades if they are able to understand what is needed from them and how they can achieve this. It is also important that they feel comfortable in their learning environment, and feel confident that they can reach their targets.

I would like to hear what the student's personal needs are, what they individually require from me as a tutor and what they struggle with in their subject. It is key that we address this head on by devising a set of lessons which are unique to the student's needs. It is also important to approach their needs in a method that suits their learning technique, for instance: what kind of learning style is suited to them? I want to fit their learning process to their abilities and their way of learning, rather than forcing them to learn according to one rigid structure. I have chosen this approach after struggling to succeed as a 'textbook learner' and realising that I am a visual learner.
