Personal Description:

Hi, I’m Alex – a friendly maths & physics tutor in London with 200+ hours experience.

I am an Engineering graduate with a Master’s 1st Class Honours Degree in Engineering Design (Mechanical Specialisation) from the University of Bristol, and also a founder & director of a start-up involved in 3D-printing technology.

I have been tutoring in various forms throughout my life, most recently as a Mentor at University tutoring degree-level maths and coding to younger students. Alongside mentorship, I tutored GCSE Mathematics part-time whilst studying, and have really enjoyed seeing students increase both their confidence and grades; I truly believe everyone can learn, I’m just here to help steer them in the right direction.

I am passionate about teaching and finding exciting new ways to engage students - this has resulted in recently winning an education grant competition with my business (JISC Summer of Student Innovation - **Web Address Removed**) to develop a project enhancing student STEM engagement. I bring these skills and experiences to my tuition, and have become proficient at explaining ideas concisely and clearly – something that is essential in both teaching and entrepreneurship.

Aside from teaching, I’m very active and enjoy rugby, cycling, climbing, playing music and learning (about anything!).

Tutoring Experience:

- I have 200+ hrs tutoring experience for many different ages and abilities – rarely has a student improved less than 2 grades
- A Mentor for the Engineering Department at University, tutoring degree-level maths and coding workshops to younger students
- Led an education project to improve Higher & Further Education STEM engagement by improving hands-on learning opportunities for students
- Taught English classes to young students for 6 months in China

My qualifications demonstrate both my academic capability and that I know how to pass exams; something I am keen to pass on to students:

Degree – Masters 1st Class with Honours, Engineering Design with Mechanical Specialisation

A-levels – 4 A*: Maths, Further Maths, Physics, Chemistry

GCSE – 8 A*, 4 A, 1 A Free Standing Mathematics Qualification (FSMQ)

I have also received the University of Bristol Prize Studentship Award for receiving the top overall mark in my University Cohort.

Tutoring Approach:

Start with a friendly conversation with the student about their requirements from the tuition – to understand where they are now, what their goals are, but mostly to get to know each other personally. I don’t want to feel like another school teacher to them! We can then develop a long-term plan to address their goals, strengths, and weaknesses - ensuring the best chance that they achieve their potential.

Once the initial meeting is done, we get stuck in. I quickly learn the student's abilities and ensure that the ongoing sessions are flexible to reflect their ability and personality. I also try my best to include engaging real-world examples and applications of the subjects – keeping interested is the key to really learning. At all stages, I include both the student and parent in all decisions and feedback, so that everyone feels involved and we get the most from the tuition.

(Sometimes a student may have a very specific short-term objective – usually an upcoming exam. In this case we will create a short-term crash course plan to prioritise these urgent areas.)

I also focus frequently on exam and learning techniques, as it is an unfortunate reality that these have a significant impact on grades. I’ll teach the students my methods for approaching and planning revision, how to use past-papers most effectively, and tips for the exams themselves (such as for remembering equations and timing).

As a young tutor who has recently gone through everything the student is facing, I’m relatable for them and can offer real advice and understanding on many topics. I hope to connect with them on a personal level and have found this to be absolutely brilliant for both academic motivation and confidence building.
