Personal Description:

I am a university student, studying for a masters degree in Biology. I have recently been through the exam system and succeeded, and I want to help other people do the same. I know the pitfalls and problems that students can suffer and I'm able to help students avoid them.

I studied Biology, Chemistry and Physics, at A2. I also studied Electronics as an additional AS level outside the normal curriculum.

Outside of studying I have worked for multinational companies and scientific consultancy firms in technical and scientific roles.

Tutoring Experience:

I have been involved with a mentoring scheme within the science department for years now, where I have been responsible for mentoring struggling younger students and helping them improve their skills in science. Effectively, I've been tutoring within my school for years.

I am also helping to run an outreach programme from my school to other secondary schools in the Southend area, to encourage more students to embrace STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and maths).

Tutoring Approach:

It's important to identify the areas students need help with first of all; while they may know they need help on certain topics, there may be other sections of their courses that they could improve on as well to ensure they don't make simple mistakes that can cost a lot of marks.

Exam boards and courses all have their own quirks so it's necessary to tailor the teaching to the course. Past exam papers are a great resource I use to make sure students have the terminology the exam boards expect in their answers, and also to make students comfortable with the exam they will sit, the types of questions they will answer, and to recognise what parts of the course are most important to have a firm grasp on to build from in other sections. Marking a question at a time with feedback on what could be improved, then letting students use these improvements to answer more questions means that they really take on board the advice you give as they can see the difference it makes instantly.

A lot of students think they are bad at a subject, and that sort of negative attitude can lead to a self-fulfilling prophecy. It's part of my job to tackle that attitude and give them the help they need to build their confidence so that on exam day the nerves won't get the better of them.
