"If you cannot explain it simply, you do not understand it well enough" - Albert Einstein
I am a 25 year old PhD in the Department of Medicine at Imperial College London, seeking to primarily to offer my services for GCSE and AS/A-Level Biology and Chemistry tuition. I recently received my Masters degree in Molecular Medicine from Imperial College London, achieving a Merit.
I am friendly, enthusiastic and approachable and genuinely want to help young people reach their true potential.
Over the past couple of years I have helped a number of students develop both professionally and personally. All of my students have achieved significantly higher grades than they were achieving before our lessons started - which is as much a reflection of me as it is for them. I take pride in motivating young people to achieve, however this requires a positive attitude from any prospective student towards the way time is spent both inside of lessons and outside.
As an undergraduate I set up peer study groups, which stimulated thought and developed understanding by discussing topics in small groups. I found listening to different perspectives really helped me through my exams, and I am committed to finding the best way of thinking about a problem for each person.
I am also fortunate to have enjoyed world class teaching at Imperial from leading researchers in their respective fields, and having had exposure to a wide range of teaching styles and techniques I am confident that I would be able to find a style to suit the best method of learning for the tutee.
Through my own personal experience, I have found that being simply bombarded with facts is not the best way of retaining information.
My sessions are more of a conversation between peers than a tutee just listening to a teacher. I encourage topic-appropriate questions and learning through looking at problems from a different perspective - after all, is insanity not just repeating the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result?
My first session is not an academic session but is completely free, and is a chance for the tutee, parents and I to get to know each other. During this time I want to understand which areas the tutee is most and least comfortable with, so that I can generate a constructive tutee-tailored plan for the next few weeks/months.
I will always start each session by briefly revisiting what was covered in the previous week before starting learning fresh material. Sessions will be conducted at a pace to suit the tutee, and not the other way around.
My goal is for my tutees to reach their true potential whilst feeling inspired.
