Employed in insurance industry for over 30 years within the actuarial domain. Regular use of mathematical formulae and logic throughout my career.
First introduced to tutoring through assisting my son and daughter through national 5 and higher mathematics examinations. Enjoy sharing my mathematical skills and discovered talent to tutor pupils effectively in their exam syllabus and application thereof to exam papers.
Tutoring in mathematics for past 5 years. Mostly on one-to-one basis. Covered national 5, higher and advanced higher maths courses. This year (2017) taught booster classes for one week at private college in Edinburgh prior to May examinations.
Initial approach is to ensure candidate has sound understanding of the relevant mathematical principles within their school syllabus. Experience in tutoring has revealed that main difficulty occurs in application of these principles to exam-style questions. Hence strategy is to review a variety of (exam) questions so that candidate can demonstrate (during the tuition lesson) his/her level of understanding. In period leading up to any class or national exam, focus is very much on past papers and/or questions relevant to upcoming exam. Aim is to boost candidate confidence in tackling questions. After lesson, leave candidate with material/homework to review and work on.
