I have a degree and a Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Strathclyde. My Ph.D. was in mathematical physics. In addition to working in the financial sector, I have spent over ten years teaching in universities across the UK.

Please note that university level tutoring starts at £35 per hour, and could rise to £50 per hour, depending on the level.

I have ten years experience of lecturing and tutoring in higher education (University of Strathclyde, University of the West of Scotland and University of South Wales) as well as a number of years of private tutoring school-level and undergraduate-level mathematics. I am able to tutor any mathematics and statistics school-level material, although my preference is for mathematics. I can also tutor most undergraduate-level mathematics up to and including Honours Year level. At this level, my strengths lie in calculus, mechanics and numerical analysis based subjects.

I feel that mathematics is best learned by example. Hence, I often go over a piece of theory, do some examples, and then ask the student do a few examples on their own while I oversee their work, correcting errors and malformed ideas where appropriate. Assessing the student at that point, I will either push on with harder examples (if the student has picked up the material), or try to explain further the concepts (if the student is still struggling). For school-level material; I will then set a few questions for the student to try over the course of the week/fortnight.

I also do work in personal development and I use the ideas and techniques in that work to help me understand my students' needs and address my tutoring style accordingly.

Alan**From Madeleine (5/5): ** *(Secondary Maths)* Many thanks to Alan for juggling his schedule to accommodate my son. Alan put my son at ease immediately. He covers a wide range of topics in the subject of maths and his professional delivery and exemplary manner clearly makes this previously tough subject and pleasure for my son to learn. My son and I both are delighted that we have found Alan and Fergus is looking forward to his next session.

Alan**From Ashfaq (5/5): ** *(A-Level Maths)* One of the best teachers I have ever had in my academic years i would highly recommend Alan he has a professional approach. A good all round tutor.

Alan**From Gillian (5/5): ** *(University Maths)* Extremely helpful tutor, manages to break complex questions down and make them understandable. Very approachable. Tackles questions in a way in which suits your style of learning. Makes learning a lot easier and enjoyable since the hardest of problems are made to be much simpler.

From Jacqueline (5/5):(A-Level Maths)Hi Alan, just to give feedback on FirstTutors to say thank you for the boost in confidence in Chris for his Maths, even after just a short couple of months with your help. Your in-depth knowledge and enthusiasm for Maths, and the way you explained the Proofs in particular, really helped Chris understand some of the ideas he had difficulty with. He really was a lot more confident in Maths, and regained his enthusiasm for this subject. I was also really appreciative that you took him on at such short notice, and so near to the exams.I'll definitely recommend you to anyone who is looking for help with Maths.

Thanks again, Jacqueline Keenan / Chris Keenan.
