Private English and Latin Tutor in Wandsworth

Originally from Belfast, at school I developed a great interest in the classical languages, was privately tutored in Classical Greek, pursued a Classics degree and then studied law, trained as a barrister and was called to the Bar. A chance conversation led me into tutoring, which I find very rewarding and enjoyable and which I am dedicated to full-time. From March 2016 to March 2019 I was President of The Tutors' Association, the professional body for tutoring in the UK. I was awarded an Honorary Fellowship in June 2018. I have tutored hundreds of students one-to-one over the past ten years in London, across the British Isles, Europe, Asia and online. I strive for my students to be the very best that they can be.

Tutoring Experience

Tutoring since 2009, I have vast experience of tutoring Latin, Classical Greek, English and the other arts subjects, including verbal and non-verbal reasoning, to Independent and State School children for 11+, Common Entrance pretest, Common Entrance and Scholarships; I also tutor GCSE, A-level, undergraduate and mature students. I am very familiar with the full range of textbooks for Latin and Greek used by schools, as well as materials to prepare for upper school entrance. For the classical languages, focus is structured and there is thorough study of language work on grammar and vocabulary, as well as set-text literature as appropriate.

Eight years' experience of tuition in London and abroad, as well as online.

International residential placements: in summer 2012 I tutored two boys in Shanghai, China, one for his Eton King's Scholarship, the other for Law. I was Hong Kong and Thailand-bound in March/April 2013 for more Eton scholarship tuition; this tutee ended up being one of just three double scholars for Eton entrance in September 2013 . In May 2013 I had the privilege of tutoring Latin in Venice and in Vienna, Austria in November preparing a boy for his Eton pre-test. In May 2014 I was tutoring twins in Switzerland for Eton and Radley scholarships; in France and Channel Islands through 2015 to 2019 and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in 2016, Singapore and Beijing in 2018, India in 2019 and Italy in 2023.

I have also tutored online to students in New York, Seattle, Hong Kong, Beijing, India, Singapore and Uzbekistan, among others.

Tutoring Approach

I see tuition to be not only a way of fostering independent learning but also as a means of being a mentor and example to inspire others to be the best. I am committed and dedicated to helping students fulfil their potential.

Arrangements for online tuition are made via Skype, Zoom or FaceTime. I also use an online whiteboard which I share with the student during the lesson. This has become a popular, complementary and convenient choice when tutoring in person at any particular stage in the process may not be convenient.

Taking into account my experience and existing tuition workload, I typically charge £80 to £100 per hour, depending on the subject, lesson duration, aim, level and location. I generally do not charge for travel if within a reasonable distance from my location. I charge the whole lesson price if it is cancelled within 24 hours.

Residential rates between £300 to £400 per day.For further information and my tutoring articles, visit admtutoring.com
