I am a British-New Zealander and recently relocated back to London after seven years in New Zealand. Prior to that I lived in London for nine years. I started a PhD in History at Birkbeck College, University of London earlier this year. My research is focused around plague and the poor in early modern London. I have an MA in History from Birkbeck College. I am married with a five year old daughter. I enjoy exploring London on the weekend, adventures in Europe with my family, and playing and experiencing music.
I was most recently Assistant Principal (curriculum area) at a secondary school in New Zealand. I was also Head of History at that school. I have been teaching History and Classical Civilisations for the past eighteen years, both in the UK and New Zealand. I was Head of History at two private schools in Hertfordshire/London. I was also Head of Humanities at one of those schools. I am an experienced teacher in the UK system and extremely passionate about History and Classical Studies.
I believe the following is integral to successful tutoring, that success measured by the tutee achieving their learning goals and enjoying the journey. Engaging the tutee and establishing a positive relationship is essential. Knowing the learner is paramount to the tutee achieving their academic goals. Ensuring the tutee is relaxed and confident in their ability and potential is important as is fostering an enjoyable learning environment. Ensuring thorough preparation for every tutorial is a must. And finally, working with the tutee to establish how to best structure tutorial sessions to ensure they are engaged and achieve their goals.
