Personal Description:

Hi! My name is Vato, I’m a classically trained pianist, composer, and performer with 7+ years experience. A recent graduate from the University of Birmingham, I have just finished a Master’s in music composition at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire.

Over my time in Birmingham I've gigged with various artists, from local legends such as Unique, to the Birmingham Conservatoire's Thallein Ensemble. My work ranges from playing pop music at Mama Roux's to improvising experimental jazz/electronics sets, but my main love is the fusion of Georgian folk music with my jazz practice in my sextet project 'Khachapuri'. I've toured the UK with contemporary jazz outfit the Origin quartet, and find myself in all manner of musical situations - usually flying by the seat of my pants until I figure out what's going on!

I have experience teaching in private, music school, and group workshop contexts, and am currently a lead tutor on B:Music's B:and Together. I'm excited to share my knowledge with those wanting to pursue music!

Tutoring Experience:

I have 1-1 teaching experience with all ages and abilities and am well-versed in teaching a variety of styles, including classical, jazz, folk, and pop. In addition to guidance through grade exams and reading music notation, I offer tutoring in theory, improvisation, and composition.

Tutoring Approach:

Ultimately, I want students to pursue their own musical goals; I will provide guidance and ensure along the way they develop secure fundamentals of technique, rhythm, and musicality.

I encourage a hands-on approach to learning. We will tackle theoretical ideas, like harmony, and concepts like how to practice, step by step. Students will learn how these ideas physically function on the keys as well as in theory, so that they can better internalise them and expand their holistic musicianship. I encourage experimentation and love answering questions to help students understand (and hear!) how and why music works.

Our first lesson will involve a chat about goals and any previous experience so I can develop a personal lesson plan, and then some playing! With beginners I will first introduce note names, hand positioning, and basic exercises to begin their journey with navigating the keyboard and developing relaxed and strong technique. For younger student I teach games and fun rhymes to help memorise notes and how to play.

For experienced students/those already working on music, I offer specific exercises tailored to assist them overcome areas they might struggle. From drills to increase expression control, to methods for relaxing the wrist, to coaching in performance technique, I treat each student as an individual and will focus on how best I can help them. Above all, I want to help students find enjoyment in the process and gain a drive for exploration as they grow into unique musicians.
