Personal Description:
I'm a professional teacher who's really passionate about music. I love 'jamming' with other musicians, singing and performing music I've written. I have also done lots of performance with choirs; an incredibly enjoyable experience. I recently moved back to Bath - my home town - from Paris (which is almost as lovely as Bath) and I previously lived and worked in Greater Manchester.
Tutoring Experience:
I am a professionally qualified teacher specialising in Music and I have taught at both secondary and primary schools, and have given private lessons on acoustic guitar to both young people and adults. At primary level, as well as teaching whole-class music lessons I gave guitar and recorder tuition and led choirs. I also had an after school music theory club for children and teens studying for grade five theory.
Tutoring Approach:
I want you to enjoy your lessons and feel motivated! That's why, once you've got the basics, I'm more than happy to choose music with you that you already love and I can break it down into easier steps where necessary.
I specialise in steel string acoustic guitar, but if you are a beginner I can give you a good overall grounding that will allow you to choose a specific style later on; the guitar is a wonderfully versatile instrument that you can take in many possibe directions. For primary aged beginners I would reccomend starting with a nylon strung guitar of an appropriate size, until you develop greater hand strength.
To learn acoustic guitar, I do not consider it essential to learn classical notation in depth. However it is important that you understand how chord symbols work and I
can help you with the theory behind this. I will also help you to develop your sense of rhythm and pitch; something that will pave the way to picking up songs by ear, improvising and composing your own music.
I can help you study for your grade five theory examination and I am experienced in doing this with students who play a variety of instruments.
I currently only teach at home. I live within easy access of bus services both from the city centre and the villages to the south of bath, and there is on street parking available. Please note that I finish teaching at 6.30 in the evening.
