Information About Tony - Motherwell teacher
This is how 2 referees rated Tony:
I'm Tony, a forty-something guitarist and pianist recently moved to Motherwell in Lanarkshire. I've played in several local bands and duos over the years. More latterly this has been mainly charity gigs with some old-friends of a similar vintage playing a mix of classic & modern covers. Evidence of these musical happenings can be found on Youtube - though you'll need to get the password off me first! I've also organised many get-togethers over the years for some of my students to show off their newly acquired musical skills (or simply watch on nervously) in various Glasgow hostelries such as Blackfriars and Lauries, where a great time has been had by all. I'm proud to say that several of my students have grown from this initial performing experience to become gigging musicians in their own right.
I've been running the guitar classes in Strathclyde University's Centre for Lifelong Learning for some 12 years now. I also teach a leisure class in Music Theory for the Learning in Later Life program there.
I've also been teaching one to one lessons in both Piano & Guitar from my flat in the West End for 10 years now. I've taught every level of player - sight-readers, non-readers, complete beginners, Grade 8 students who've "forgotten it all", professional musicians (including the odd semi-famous name), those who feel "stuck in a rut" with their playing etc.
In Piano, for beginners/improvers, I emphasise a grasp of modern accompaniment styles - eg The Beatles, Elton John, Billy Joel, Stevie Wonder, Carole King etc. This is really a chordal approach, with simpler left hand figures that will get you playing real songs right away. This fast track approach does away with the need for long scale exercises etc. Most adults I meet mainly want to be able to play some songs they like - as soon as possible! This approach has proved to be the one they overwhelmingly favour in that regard. For that reason I create many of my own notations for songs. My students do pick up a fair bit of theory along the way, it's just that the theory tends to emerge from the songs as mental connections are made, rather than from recommending dry theory books. I also teach some more traditional classical piano, including sight reading up to around Grade 4 or 5.
In guitar, I mainly work from tablature (tab) as this has become the Lingua Franca of the internet in terms of popular song on guitar. I have comprehensive beginners, improvers and intermediate courses in guitar, and am often open to specific song requests. I've been playing for over 30 years and have taught all styles from folk to pop to jazz to classical.
As well as music and tab sheets, back up material using CDs, MP3s and even Video help students retain the lesson while practicing at home…
