Personal Description:

Hello, I'm Tom. I'm a full time freelance musician working predominantly in Bristol and London at the moment. Most of my work is in choral music (both as a singer and choral conductor) and I run a number of choirs of varying abilities and experience including a London-based professional early music group called The Erebus Ensemble, and a community choral society just outside Bristol. I am also Director of Music at St Matthew's Kensington Olympia.

When I'm not making music I split my time between teaching it and administrating it. Teaching forms a core part of my work and it something that I continue to relish for the sheer diversity of personality that it brings with each student! I am also Artistic Director of the Clifton Music Festival, an annual event that celebrates some of the world's top classical music performers and showcases them alongside young local talent from Bristol and the surrounding regions.

Tutoring Experience:

I have six years of teaching experience and have tutored all ages and abilities in singing, music theory, intermediate piano and, most recently, choral conducting. The majority of my teaching is carried out one-to-one but I also enjoy devising and delivering workshops for larger groups and have done this for youth groups including Gorseinon Youth Choir (South Wales), Weston-Super-Mare Youth Orchestra and Durham University Singers.

Tutoring Approach:

I hopefully achieve a relaxed but firm balance with my students. Music is, of course, there to be enjoyed and this should be remembered whether giving the tuition or receiving it. That said, most students I encounter really want to be pushed to their potential and I think this is very important. Music making is truly one of the most rewarding exercises and, as well as being fun, it teaches important skills about discipline, personal development, teamwork and a host of other things that are quite useful in life!

I have a background in academia having completed an MA at the University of Bristol in 2008 and like to give lots of consideration to the music's context instead of simply instructing on the physicalities of how to play or sing it. In my experience this goes down very well with students of all ages, although the depth to which we go into varies considerably according to the student.

My mine consideration is always the uniqueness of each student. People learn at different rates according to a number of factors and it is important to recognise this and create an approach that is appropriate for each student.
