Personal Description:

Learn within the comfort of your own home - I come to you!

Hi my name is Tom.

I am a 27 year old graduate of the Bmus (Hons) Degree course at The Institute of Contemporary Music Performance, London. On this course I also completed the Rockschool teaching diploma (LRSL) at level 6, and the NSPCC Child Protection Awareness In Music course. I am based in Latchingdon, near Maldon and Chelmsford. I am a friendly outgoing individual, and to give you some idea of what I've done in the past, here is the history of my musical career so far:

Whatnext Project organised by Bigga Fish – June – July 2010

I took part in a project called “Whatnext,” which involved bringing musicians from different schools in London together, to create original tracks and play them at Somerset House as part of an opening act for N–Dubz. The project also involved us playing at Lovebox festival in Victoria Park in London, on a small stage opening the Gaymer’s Cider stand. From this experience, I learned how to work with others to create new material, how a professional concert is managed, the procedures that go into performing at such an event, and also how to put on a good performance in front of a large crowd.

Performing as part of an unpaid session band – August – November 2010

Following “Whatnext,” I started playing guitar for one of the singers called Enrico Delves, who also took part in the project. This involved me learning his material, arranging the parts for guitar, then performing the songs live with him at various venues. From this I gained knowledge of how to arrange parts for guitar, specifically keyboard and synthesizer parts in this case, and how to play hip hop / r n b songs accurately. Also, I gained experience of how different venues operate.

Jesus Christ Superstar Musical – 22nd – 24th July 2010

“That’s Life” original Rat Pack Musical – 9th – 11th September 2010

I took part in two musical productions organised by the Stage One Theatre Company, and performed at the Kenneth More theatre in Ilford. The shows were unpaid, but the proceeds went to charity. This involved me learning the songs, working with a musical director, reading the pieces of music, and working with other musicians and actors.

Playing with an original band “HeKz” summer 2011 – present

I currently play with originals progressive metal band “HeKz”. Whilst playing in the band I have gained live experience, improved my guitar playing through learning the parts, and improved my general musicianship. I have also gained experience of recording in a professional studio and the techniques that go into making an album. We have played all over the UK from Southampton to Birmingham, and have also played in Holland several times.

Playing in the jazz quartet "Four Farthings" summer 2012 - 2015

From this band I have learnt how to work as a quartet, and the advanced theory and technical aspects of jazz. It is something totally different to anything I have previously done, and has helped me to become a more rounded musician.

Playing in the acoustic duo "Squire and " 2016 - present

One half of the vocal and guitar acoustic duo. Having played various functions and parties, it's fun and challenging being the guitarist / bass player / drummer / backing singer all at once!

Playing in the 80's glam rock covers band "Sounds Better Naked"
2017 - present

My first time being the only guitar player in a rock band setting. Absolutely great fun putting on a show and dressing up for the part! Continuing to learn the more challenging aspects of guitar playing from the genre, and improving my stage performance as well.

I have also studied the Ukulele and Mandolin, and have gigging experience with these instruments, having played Mandolin in the ICMP All Stars Orchestra, and Ukulele whilst giving Martin Day a lesson on Heart FM.

Tutoring Experience:

Before I started my own practice,I spent some time as an assistant to a private guitar tutor in Maldon, Essex. This involved helping him to organise some lessons, teach some students, and setting up equipment for lessons. I also performed in some showcases to promote Andy’s Rock School, one of which was sponsored by Ashdown Engineering. From this role I gained knowledge of how a private teaching practice is run, and also how lessons are taught in schools, in this case New Hall School in Chelmsford.

Private teaching – February 2008 to the present

Following my work experience, and after having settled into college I started my own teaching practice. I have taught students between the ages of 5 and 80, and I have gained experience of how to plan lessons, how to recognise various learning styles and how to use different teaching methods. I have taught beginners, intermediate students and some advanced players. I have mostly taught guitar and ukulele, but I am also able to teach music theory and sight reading along with other aspects that don’t involve playing. I can also work from a prepared course pack such as the Rockschool grade books, and school syllabuses.

I have also been a teacher at Allegro Music in Chelmsford since 2013.

Tutoring Approach:

My aim is to get you to where you want to be as a player and musician - whether it be strumming a few chords, playing a lightning fast guitar solo, or learning complex jazz harmony and theory!
