Personal Description:

I am a friendly teacher with 20 years' experience in schools, privately, and at a Junior Conservatoire (Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama). I teach all abilities, from absolute beginner through to degree level, and students aged 4 through to 70+. I enjoy working with adult learners, and am keen to work together to tailor lessons to individual's tastes and aims.

I am an active performer and composer, and gained the MMus and BMus (hons) degrees in flute performance at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama.

Tutoring Experience:

In addition to teaching privately, I have taught at the following places:

Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, Junior Conservatoire – Tutor of flute and descant recorder. Also chamber music coaching, and music theory tutor.
Gwent Music Support Service – Peripatetic Woodwind Tutor.
Cardiff and the Vale Music Service – Peripatetic Woodwind Tutor.

Tutoring Approach:

My students learn for a variety of reasons; some purely for enjoyment, others to also pass graded examinations. For those who would like to study for exams, I use both the Associated Board and Trinity syllabi.

Lessons always include ensemble work, along with a focus on developing aural and sight reading skills continuously – not just in order to pass exams. I have a varied musical background, and have worked with the Welsh National Opera and National Theatre Wales, various smaller groups, and have a keen interest in popular music (having appeared on BBC Radio 1, 3 and 6). I also bring a wealth of experience in improvisation to lessons, and encourage students to expand their playing through imagination and creativity. I focus on each individual's strengths and aims, and am keen that my students become well-rounded, happy musicians!

I have taught a number of adult learners. Their motivation for taking lessons is varied – some played whilst younger and find they want to return to the instrument. Others have no previous musical experience whatsoever, but have always wanted to play. In either case, I am mindful of the needs of adult learners, and work with students to devise a plan of work that is guided by their musical tastes and aims.

I travel to student's homes for lessons (dependent on distance). Sometimes I will need to charge a small fee to cover my travel - please just contact me to discuss.
