Personal Description:

I teach saxophone (all styles, specialising in jazz) and piano (jazz only). I have been a highly regarded freelance jazz musician for nearly 20 years - working with many highly regarded UK artists in performing, recording, production, education and community music projects. I care deeply about releasing people's potential and enthusiasm in performing arts. I have worked on many instruments and bring a broad and also natural musical approach to all my work - with lots of fun and enthusiasm too.
I am currently based in Cambridge, UK.
All lessons are currently online, but I will happily take pupils for online learning only - so geography is not prohibitive.
(I am also Chaplain to Girton College in Cambridge, working part time alongside my music work - hence the theological qualifications!)

Tutoring Experience:

I have 19 years of experience as a highly regarded professional jazz multi-instrumental performer, recording artist, session musician, and bring all that experience to my tuition work. I have taught peripatetic piano, saxophone, clarinet, and flugelhorn at secondary school level, as well as having taught many private pupils - children and adults - on saxophone and piano but also trumpet, guitar and others; I am a jazz saxophone tutor at Morley College, London and teach from beginner to advanced level. I bring a musically focussed approach to lessons - making sure that students are able to develop good technique, but also working intuitively towards the real goal, which is enjoying playing great music. I have a highly developed ear, an ability to compose music appropriate for individual pupils, and to quickly produce material that adapts to where each student is and what they want to focus on.

I teach one off sessions as well as regular lessons and would like to hear from anyone simply looking to improve their playing, especially in jazz.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe music education is about tutor and pupil working together, rather than teaching in a top-down fashion. I teach as an experienced performer and educator who cares about you being able to make the music you want to make. I have highly adaptable teaching methods geared towards your learning style and the music you love, and work hard to make sure that you are able to learn in the way that best suits you. I think kindness and enthusiasm go a long way when it comes to education, and will always seek to encourage and enthuse. I have a track record of many satisfied pupils - often who are seeking a teacher who helps them to enjoy as well as learn. Please get in touch for a chat - no pressure! Happy to do a one off lesson to see if I'm a fit for you - it's important you feel comfortable learning with me.
