Over the years that Tom has been playing, he has thoroughly built up his musical knowledge and skills on the drum kit. Starting at the age of 16, Tom decided he wanted to take his hobby and make a career out of it.
Tom never studied music in school so all of his education came after secondary school, studying under the wing of Micheal Allan at the Colchester Institute. Six years of education later, Tom achieved his BA(Hons) Degree in Popular Music.
Whilst studying Tom also had many musical projects on the go. This included playing in original bands creating his own music, as well as playing in function bands across the country. Tom has enjoyed playing at many different venues ranging from the pits of the world famous Silverstone Race Circuit, to being part of the first band to play in the Bombay Sapphire Gin distillery. He has also played in theatre shows such as Pink Floyd's 'The Wall' production at The Mercury Theatre in Colchester, and Andrew Lloyd Webber's 'Whistle Down the Wind' at Braintree Theatre. In addition to this, Tom has had the pleasure of working with The Blues Brothers experience playing at the Guildhall Theatre in Derby.
Tom's passion for music and playing is second to none and being in a position where he can teach and influence others, he wants to inspire his students to become the drummers he knows they can be. Through experience, Tom knows that there is no better feeling than watching a student grow and improve under his influence and instruction.
Having completed my Professional Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE), I have been fully trained in the teaching industry, helping to provide my students with the best lessons possible. I currently work at The Stanway School in Colchester, so I also possess a DBS certificate.
I use RSL (Previously Rock School) and Trinity Rock and Pop syllabus'. These help to improve your sight reading, aural skills and rudiments to improve your playing, all with full performance pieces to learn included.
Lessons are suitable for all ages and abilities with my youngest student being 8 years old and my oldest in their 40's! All learning will be fun, with an enthusiastic and energetic teacher.
My lessons vary depending on what direction you desire to take. Some students will want to learn how to just play along to some of their favourite tracks and some students will want to learn how to sight read drum notation and aspire to make a career out of playing drums but ultimately, there is no right or wrong decision when it comes to which direction you want to take! Here are just some of the areas we will cover during lessons:
- The drum essentials and foundations
- Visions and directions
- Practice Regimes
- Building vocabulary and knowledge
- Applying technique, groove and fills
- Advanced drumming (soloing/improvisation, linear drumming, cross rhythms)
- Music theory and sight reading
