"Thomas 's 'Making Light' is excellently written - brilliant piece" - Sara Mohr-Pietsch, BBC Radio 3
I am a London-based composer. I have worked projects with the National Portrait Gallery, the Royal Academy of Arts and the Lontano Ensemble among others and am currently reading a master's degree in composition at The Royal College of Music.
I also play the saxophone, performing my own compositions either as a soloist or with ensemble. I studied jazz saxophone for three years with renowned saxophonist Trish Clowes at the Royal Academy of Music.
My compositional approach takes off from spectralist thinking, but detours and delves into unfamiliar ways of dividing the octave, setting contrasting tonal systems in contest with one another. Indeterminacy and improvisation also contribute to my work.
I have started my own concert series called "Unheard" which commissions new pieces from upcoming composers and presents them in an East London bookshop.
I have taught A-Level music sessions in a 6th form college in Holland Park. These sessions covered music history, theory, and general musicianship topics.
I have several students both for Saxophone and Composition tuition ranging from absolute beginner to undergraduate degree support.
I work as an administrator for the Junior department at the Royal Academy of Music and so regularly manage the delivery of expert-level teaching in a specialist school and work with children from the ages of 4 to 18.
As part of the Unheard concert series I mentor emerging composers and run workshops to help develop their work.
I believe it is important to structure learning with clear set targets and goals for the student to aim for. Enthusiasm is also vital to make sure that lessons remain productive and enjoyable.
I pride myself on my friendly approach to tutoring which maintains a balance between committed concentrated learning and having fun!
Lessons are available in both English and French. I am able to teach anywhere within London zones 1-2, potentially as far as zone 3 in south/south-east London.
