Personal Description:

I have been playing the drums regularly for 20 years, reaching grade 8 standard at the age of 15. I also have the knowledge of music theory to grade 5 standard. I am 26, a Cardiff University graduate working in North Wales, and I have a great passion for drumming and music in general, which I would like to pass on to beginners as well as help more advanced players develop. I have been a part of many bands, including jazz and classical orchestras, a touring jazz quintet, as well as more rock/funk bands over the past 10 years. Prior to this, I was part of a local brass band and Cornwall Youth Brass Band for 8 years. I follow professional drummers keenly, regularly attending masterclasses and pushing myself to develop new skills.

Tutoring Experience:

I have led many percussion sectionals as part of the county brass band and jazz band, and have also gained some teaching experience at Truro School alongside the music department. Since then, I have been teaching drums from home in Cornwall, and during the past 2 years, teaching several children and adults around Llandudno / Conwy / Colwyn Bay, North Wales.

Tutoring Approach:

I offer lessons on a basic electric drum kit from home, and am willing to travel locally to you (around Conwy, Llandudno, Colwyn Bay area) - this is preferable if you have your own kit. For beginners, I aim to introduce the proper technique required at a pace that suits you, to ensure no bad habits are developed early (sticking, rudiments, timing etc). I would use experience gained in my years of lessons - learning from occasional bad lessons I've had too - to transfer my skills, as well as use quality, professional guides, hence also teaching written music and sight reading along with developing the playing technique. I'd gauge the teaching level from playing along to your choice of music, then develop various drumming styles to suit you. For intermediate students, I would aim to teach in the style that you wish to learn, e.g. whether you wish to play in a jazz or rock band, or simply achieve Guildhall Trinity grades 1-8. Overall, I would ensure that the teaching is an enjoyable experience, just as it was for me!
