Personal Description:

Stephen is a fourth year undergraduate student of The Royal Academy of Music, currently studying with Richard Watkins, having previously studied with Michael Thompson. Stephen started playing the horn age 10 and just five years later he successfully auditioned for Junior Guildhall and began studying with David Bentley. Later that year Stephen was selected to play Principal Horn in the LSO Youth Orchestra at the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games. Having developed a keen interest in Musical Theatre, Stephen auditioned for The National Youth Music Theatre and was selected to play Principal Horn on 'BRASS' by Benjamin Till in Leeds, which won Best New Musical 2015. The success of this show lead to the production of two music videos, an Original Cast Recording and a re-run at the Hackney Empire in 2016. Stephen has had the opportunity to perform at venues such as The Royal Albert Hall, Cadogan Hall, St. John's Smith Square, LSO St.Lukes, Birmingham Symphony Hall, The Barbican and The Royal Festival Hall, as well as having opportunities to record at Air Studios and Abbey Road.
At the Academy Stephen has had the chance to play under Semyon Bychkov, Manuel Lopez-Gomez and Edward Gardner OBE. Other notable performances at the Academy include playing with Norma Winston in the National Jazz festival, performing with Radovan Vlatkovic in a Horn Nonet, and linking up with RADA to perform Sondheim's 'A Little Night Music'. Outside the Academy Stephen has played with the London Mahler Orchestra, YMSO, The London Graduate Orchestra and the Docklands Sinfonia, performing in the World Premiere of the new musical "Men who March Away" by Mike Batt. Recent Performances of note outside the Academy include the Royal Opening of the Francis Crick Institute with GMT Brass Ensemble and an appearance on Channel 4's 'The Last Leg' in a Brass Quintet. In relation to chamber music, Stephen has recently taken a front seat in terms of organisation for his Horn Quartet ‘Capital Horns’, who were Highly Commended in The Worshipful Company of Musicians Brass Ensembles Prize 2017, and as such has lined up a number of concerts for the ensemble in the coming year.
Solo performances include playing Mozart's 4th Horn Concerto with the Havering Youth Orchestra and competition wins including: The Coopers' Music festival, Havering Young Musician of the Year, Essex Young Rotary Musician of the Year, as well as being Highly commended in the Junior Guildhall Lutine Prize. Stephen has performed in master classes with Amos Miller Jeff Nelson, Tim Thorpe, Richard Bissil, Froydis Ree Wekre, Radovan Vlatkovic and Dave Lee.

Tutoring Experience:

Stephen has recently completed the prestigious LRAM teaching Diploma with Paul Harris and John Hutchins and is now looking to work with enthusiastic students of all ages to help them achieve their goals and aid their musical development.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe the best approach to music tuition is to carefully nurture and guide a student's natural creativity in order to convey a message through their musicality which we will build together, whilst conquering any issues we happen to stumble upon.
