Personal Description:

I am an enthusiastic and versatile violin tutor with experience teaching all ages. No matter why you play or how much, I carefully tailor my lessons around your needs and interests and hope we have a laugh together.

Having grown up in the Highlands of Scotland I usually incorporate folk tunes alongside classical studies as I believe this helps to expand technique and sometimes offers respite from the scales!

When not teaching I work part-time at Plymouth University, lovingly tend to an allotment and am slowly preparing to apply for a Masters in Composition in the future.

I am also available for GCSE, A-Level, composition and theory lessons.
***I usually teach at home but can come to you in some circumstances.***

Tutoring Experience:

Approaching 3 years' experience teaching a variety of ages and in different settings.

Music BMus (1st Class Honours, Composition) from the University of Glasgow
Member of the Music Teachers’ Association of Queensland 2017
One year's student placement at the Schulich School of Music, McGill University, Montréal
Grade 8 Violin (Merit, 2011)
Grade 5 Theory (Distinction, 2009)
Previous member of The Highland Regional Youth Orchestral, Highland Youth String Orchestra and a National Youth Orchestra of Scotland residency
Many years' experience of live performance across several genres
Basic training in Alexander Technique
Wide experience across other arts disciplines including theatre, stage management and dance calling

Tutoring Approach:

Music is primarily about enjoyment! I usually include folk music in my lessons for both enjoyment and technique purposes.
Music also hones many important transferable skills including goal-setting, time management, listening, problem-solving, public engagement - it is a holistic activity with a balance of technical, practical and emotional elements. I believe everybody feels this balance differently and I carefully tailor my lessons and communication with you around the needs we identify together, in order for you to get the most out of your music.
