I’m Essie, an actor and experienced singing teacher based in Clapham. In 2017 I graduated from one of the top ranking British drama schools, The Oxford School of Drama, where I undertook the three year course in Professional Acting.
I’m a passionate singer, beginning at a very young age and taking formal lessons since the age of 11. I learnt advanced theory and technique whilst studying music A Level, in which I received the top grade and full marks in the performance module. Whilst at drama school, I received training from highly accomplished and professional voice and singing tutors, with whom I worked with on a regular one to one basis. My training was a classical one, singing with several choirs including a chamber choir and taking exams through the ABRSM and Trinity Guildhall music boards. However, I have always had a love for musical theatre and acting through song and am also passionate about performing and teaching this area of singing.
I am also a keen dancer, theatre goer (of course) and have a BA (Hons) degree in English Literature and Theatre from the University of Sheffield. I tutor from my home which is quiet, has good, private space and provides a calm and friendly working atmosphere.
I have a wide range of experience in teaching, mentoring and workshop leadership and, throughout the years, have taught an age range varying from 8 to 65. As well as teaching singing, I am a choir leader and a one-to-one drama coach. My experience has made me a very confident teacher with an excellent grasp of my subject areas.
Whether a tutee has never had a singing lesson before and just fancies giving it a go, or would like to hone and strengthen their vocal technique, confidence and repertoire, I am fully dedicated in helping them achieve their goals. I’m aware that everyone has their own relationship with music, as well as with their own voice, and feel very strongly in the importance of personally tailoring sessions to allow students to engage, build confidence and reach their full potential.
I consider there to be three main area of singing: Technique (breathing, posture, range, tone etc), theory (sight-reading, aural skills, understanding and reading music etc), and performance (emotional journey, characterisation, stage presence). I consider these areas vital for expanding a tutees singing abilities and confidence, however I understand that some students are less concerned about a certain aspect (such as music theory) and will ensure that their interests drive the sessions. Either way, we will always focus on developing the tools and techniques to allow the tutee to sing with greater freedom, ability and enjoyment.
My lessons will begin with a warm up followed by scale based exercises to improve range and work on technique, providing a solid technical foundation vital for a strong and healthy singing voice. I adapt these exercises to the students ability and needs, and they are then brought into the specific song that we will work on in that session. I have a wide range of sheet music varying from classical to (lots of!) musical theatre and will choose music suiting and challenging the tutees ability and interests. I’m also open to working on songs that a student suggests and is particularly keen to tackle.
I use a keyboard when teaching songs or working on theory and technique, however my piano skills are not advanced and therefore I use backing tracks during the majority of the session. This allows me to fully engage with the student as they're singing, whether it's to identify technical areas that we can work on or provide them with an audience to perform to.
Finally, as a tutor I bring a confidence, warmth and passion that allows my students to feel at ease and maximise their time with me. Whether you're an adult learner looking to improve your technique and get singing more, or a parent of a child that would perhaps like them to take singing exams, I will be fully committed to achieve the best results and maximum enjoyment!

I admit that I am new to singing (30 years old) so we are covering a song I prefer and doing some exercises to strengthen my voice.
If you have any questions about singing or how your body reacts to somethings she is very happy to stop, explain and discus. I couldn't ask for a more patient teacher.
Only suggestion would be not to remind students of how long left in each lesson - singing can be a great relaxation tool and life outside singing is already hard pressed at all - but I do understand the need to set boundaries!
My daughter is delighted and so are we to have found Essie… 5 stars!
