Originally hailing from the Shetland islands, Manchester based tutor, Sophie is a recent graduate of the Royal Northern College of Music where she gained a first class degree under the tutelage of Eira Lynn Jones. Alongside a varied freelance career - consisting of performances as a soloist, as a member of her flute and harp duo, the Albion duo and in numerous orchestras throughout the north west, - Sophie is a passionate educator who thoroughly enjoys helping people not only further their knowledge of the harp but to learn to love it too.
At present, Sophie is principle harp tutor at Aura Academy in Altrincham where she teachers pupils at various ages and stages, ranging anywhere from aged 6 - 46! Furthermore, Sophie regularly works alongside different harp ensembles including Transpennine harps and Rydal School Harp ensemble. Most recently, Sophie has been working with the RNCM's Young Harp scheme, teaching and assisting new harpists as they are introduced to performance in an ensemble setting. Another recent project of Sophie's is ‘Music Matters’ – a workshop series with the aim of introducing the harp. As a result, groups such as school children, care home residents and stroke rehabilitation groups have all enjoyed getting to know the harp, what it can do, and the music surrounding it.
Whilst Sophie believes that solid foundations - good technique, an ability to read music and an understanding of music theory - are crucial from an early stage, she believes it possible to incorporate all of this in a fun and interactive way!
