Hi! I am Ashley, a current student in the Royal Northern College of music. As a student undertaking Master of Music in Performance, I enjoy performing as a soloist and collaborative pianist. I have many years of performing and teaching experience in different countries including Malaysia, Singapore, and UK. I was born in a multi-racial country - Malaysia, hence I am able to teach and communicate with English, Mandarin, Cantonese and Malay very fluently. I enjoy taking part of different competitions, and haf recently received the First Prize and Expressive Performance Special Award of the UK International Music Competition (Professional Category), Silver Prize and Country Representative of the Classical Music Award (Professional Category).
I have six years of teaching experience, and my students include young children and adults. I have much experience guiding students to undertake ABRSM and Trinity graded exams. I have also been teaching students who are thinking to learn without taking any exams. Except piano playing, I am also experienced with teaching music theory and aural skills. I am also passionate in music education for young children, has constantly taken part in training in music education with different teaching philosophies, including Kodaly and Orff Schulwerk. My students maintain a 100% pass rate with merit and distinction in ABRSM exams, with some of them winning prizes in different competitions.
I aim to analyze students' learning habit, strengths and weaknesses, and design lesson plans that suit each student the most. I prefer active learning, so I would encourage you to share your thoughts as much as possible to explore the creativity within yourself. Besides helping you to build up piano playing technique, I like add in different activities including simple compositions, improvisations, etc.to build up musicality simultanously. I belive that the combination of playing technique and musicality is important to piano learning, but it's also important to keep the learning as fun as possible!
