I have taught my brother and father from scratch and made them reasonably proficient. I currently have 3 students, 2 beginners and 1 advanced, and they are all very happy with me.
My approach would be to get a clear idea of what the student/parent wants and try to help them achieve it. I would tailor the lessons to their needs and teach them what they want to learn, as well as providing non-obligatory suggestions about what would be best for their development. Most importantly, I would want to make sure that whatever happens, the students enjoy their lessons, don’t feel pressured and feel like they are achieving their goals, as those are the most important things.
