This is how 2 referees rated Simon:
Began Piano at age 6 and took grade 8 London College and ABRSM at age 14. Also play brass instruments and sing. Have experience of conducting and arranging for a variety of ensembles including Brass Bands, Wind Bands, Musicals and Orchestras. I've worked in retail as a trainee manager for Woolworths and as a Stores Accountant in the Royal Navy. On leaving the RN I trained as a teacher.
I started teaching in 2007 at the David Young Community Academy in Seacroft, Leeds, but unfortunately I found that I was not suited to the classroom environment so left in 2010. Setting up as a private teacher later in the same year.
A pupil has in mind what they want to achieve, even from an early age. I try to use this enthusiasm to engage the pupil in learning about music generally by teaching them musicianship (the understanding and an appreciation of a wide range of music). Young pupils will work on understanding the basics of beat and rhythm before moving onto the working of the piano and then how to play it. This may take some time but is a good grounding in being able to count and hear the beat in any piece of music, essential for performing. Once they have a confident understanding of the beat and rhythm I move them to 'Get Set! Piano' tutor books, which I find best suit my teaching style and most pupils. Adults and older beginners I request bring along pieces they want to learn and I teach technique based on their choices.
