Personal Description:

Sid is a professional singer/songwriter and musician with over 15 years experience in performance and composition.

Originally from Cumbria, he moved to York in 2015 to enhance his teaching career and support others in the art of learning a musical instrument.

A member of the Registry of Guitar Tutors (RGT), Sid now teaches guitar, ukulele and piano to beginners and intermediates. He is an approved tutor of the York Music Hub, a member of the Ukulele Society of Great Britain, and a member of the Performers Rights Society.

Sid has released 13 albums and has composed music for independent films, plays, internet chat-shows, gaming podcasts and even books.

His superb talent led him to being featured in iTunes 'Best of' 2012.

Sid performs with The Ukulele Sunshine Revival Band and is a resident musician for Lady Anne Middleton’s Hotel (York).

Outside of music, he is an author of comedy novellas and a professional cartoonist and illustrator.

Tutoring Experience:

I moved to York in November 2015 and set up my teaching practice in January 2017. I teach all ages.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach is to make learning an instrument fun. This is how I came up with Strumpluck. Strumpluck is a board game that sees young students progress through a numbered board, landing on different tiles, that require them to either answer questions or perform tasks, relating to their instrument. The RGT syllabus is still being taught, but by presenting it this way, students are more engaged, they pay more attention and they retain information better. Most importantly, they are incentivised to practice outside of lessons. Strumpluck can be played with one student or in small groups.

For adults, lessons are relaxed, informal and fun.

With regards to adults, I keep them invested by allowing them to have significant input into what our lessons consist of. Again, the syllabus is still being taught but in more digestible pieces, surrounding it with musical tangents they want to pursue. Most of my students don't take exams, they want to learn in a fun, relaxed, and informal setting, and I can provide this.

But having said that, the opposite can be true. Teachers have to be versatile because every student is different and has different needs. I ask students at the start what they want to achieve.
