Welcome to my profile. I am a mother of two grown children. As well as teaching piano I work with animals both domesticated and wild as a volunteer and also with The Garden House Hospice. I have a rescue cat and two rescued guinea pigs four rescued ex commercial hens and I have raised orphaned squirrels (and before children get all excited the squirrels went to a sanctuary). At the heart of everything I do is patience, kindness and tolerance.
I have been teaching the piano and musical theory for over twenty years, to both children and adults. I have placed children into exams and they always achieve good marks. However I choose not to do this anymore. I teach for pleasure.
I hold workshops on musical expression and understanding and the fun way to view theory.
I hold social events in my home including concerts which are fun and without pressure to play.
I am DBS checked and liability insured.
I have also taught art privately and in college set ups with adults and those with learning difficulties.
Recently I wrote and taught an online Creative Writing course to help people cope with lockdown. I hold a BA in English and Creative Writing from The Open University 2009.
I have been a mentor for secondary school pupils and a tutor for adults with literacy needs.
We are currently in very turbulent times with regards to Covid-19.
During a national or regional lockdown I do not give lessons in my home but use Whatsapp video link with those that can do this. Others have to wait until lockdown is lifted. I do however keep in contact via a Whatsapp Piano Group and regular contact to help maintain their practise.
Once we can return to lessons at my home we follow the actions I have raised in my Risk Assessment sent to all students and the government/NHS guidelines. I provide sanitizer, hand wipes and masks, wipe down everything before and after every lesson, adhere to social distancing and operate a one way system in my home so that students or family members do not mix with others. The room is large and well ventilated. In fact there is minimal risk in my teaching room or home. I do not provide the usual sibling toys or activities so parents are to bring their own please. I do not offer drinks as this is not allowed at the moment.
Gosh that all sounds very dry and tedious doesn't it! Not me at all.
I am actually a fun and bubbly teacher who believes that learning is about the person's own path and needs and their confidence. I approach each individual as unique and so my teaching style is flexible and the choice of music is very much determined by the student. In fact we make a unique music book full of the student's favourite pieces so they are never lost or under-practised.
Firstly I would like to mention that most of my lessons, particularly for beginners, are thirty minutes long and cost £20. Fifty minute lessons at £25 are usually offered to those of Grade 2 ability and above.
I teach those who wish to learn as a hobby from ages 7 to adult of any age. I no longer support students wanting to take ABRSM examinations.
I create my own worksheets to help with theory and use rewards to motivate such as fun stickers and achievement certificates. We have workshops and also social events when Covid is not in the way.
