Personal Description:

I am a recent classical accordion graduate of The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland where I gained an upper second class honours degree. In my time at the Conservatoire, I also took modules in Flute Performance, Advanced Theory, Teaching and Conducting. I also won The Agnes Millar Harmony & Counterpoint Prize in my first year, and gained Highly Commended in The Bach Prize in my second year. I teach a variety of genres, including classical, traditional Scottish and pop music.
Away from the RCS, I have also been choir director and organist at Williamwood Parish Church, where I rehearse the choir once a week and play organ for church services.

Tutoring Experience:

I started teaching as a deputy tutor for The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland Junior Department in 2015, teaching accordion, fiddle and musicianship classes. I have been teaching accordion (beginner and improvers) at The Glasgow Folk-Music Workshops twice a week since April 2016. I have taught students from a who range of ages, and have experience of teaching 1-1 and in groups. I have also been teaching beginner piano privately for a year and have had success in students taking ABRSM exams. I also teach a whole range of music theory, whether it is to progress with the higher ABRSM practical exams, or to improve pupils’ reading skills.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe learning music is enjoyable for everyone, and it doesn’t need to be stressful. I negotiate appropriate goals with students so that we can have fun while improving our skills. Goals may include; being prepared to play in a concert, sit a music exam, or learn something for your own enjoyment. I am also happy for students to see where music can take them by going to concerts, music courses, or even just listening to different genres in their own time. The first lesson is about finding out what the student’s goals are, then from there I make tailored lesson plans to assure those goals can be met.
