I live in St Andrews with my teenage daughter and work at the University of Bristol. I studied English at University but had a music scholarship which meant I could continue with my own lessons and regularly perform in concerts. I am classically trained but I love all types of music and strongly believe that the key to success lies in motivation, so I am as happy working with pupils who want to play Birdie as those who prefer Bach, and I have a broad range of music books in my cupboard!
I started teaching in my early twenties to gain experience for my teaching diploma. I qualified in 2006 and quickly built up a base of pupils ranging from age 6 to 60! Some needed the goal of exams, some were very shy but learned the pleasure of using music as a way to express themselves, some came up with amazing excuses as to why they hadn't been able to practise that week! But we still put on some great concerts… Since moving to Bristol a couple of years ago I have not taught any lessons, but have missed my pupils a lot and have decided to take on a small number of pupils again.
The most important thing about music is enjoyment. I take time to find out what the pupil wants to gain from the lessons and tailor my approach accordingly.
