Personal Description:

I am a Guitar and 5 String Banjo tutor based in Ilkley West Yorkshire. My business, roymusic, was established in September 2011. My musical interests are varied, being a classically trained guitar player but also having a love of folk and traditional Irish music, both song and instrumental on guitar and bluegrass banjo.

Tutoring Experience:

I have been teaching full time since September 2011 and am building a varied and satisfied student base ranging from ranging from 12 year old budding guitarists to much older budding bluegrass banjo players.

People learn in different ways; aurally, through repetition, by understanding theory, from a musical score etc. The key to successful tutoring is making use of specific methods that match the learning style of the individual. During my time as a tutor I have I have met some wonderful people who have studied with me for many years.

I am happy to work with students to achieve exam success in electric, acoustic and classical guitar for examination boards RGT, Rockschool and Trinity Rock and Pop

I am a full member of the RGT (Registery of Guitar Tutors) and have CRB Disclosure.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that there are three main aspects that help musician's development and they are technique, supporting theory and fun. Good technique is a keystone to developing ability in any instrument and I reinforce this during lessons with practical exercises to help develop both hands. Theory is incorporated in lessons to be of practical use to the student, helping them to understand how chords are built, the meaning of time signatures and keys etc. To encourage performance, and to develop a 'musical' diary I record students both playing solo and with me accompanying. Where appropriate, and particularly for tenor banjo, I record backing tracks for the students to play along with at home. To maintain a balance of technique and interest, I encourage students to suggest songs they may wish to learn. I then compose tab and score versions of the songs with a level of complexity appropriate to the student.
