Personal Description:

At present, I have no long term availability, but due to the temporary absence of students, I have limited availability of up to a few months. This would suit those wanting to: 'test the musical water'; some short term help with piano playing or music theory; practise of aural tests and/or sight-reading. You may like some supervised piano practise! For tuition either a grand or digital piano is available.

I am an experienced teacher and have had a large, private, piano and theory teaching practice in New Zealand, in addition to teaching in a number of schools. I am now based in Heworth and have a private teaching practice. I enjoy helping students begin or continue their musical journey. My aim is to help them reach their musical potential, whatever that may be.

Tutoring Experience:

I am experienced in teaching both children and adults. While some have chosen to learn for pleasure, I have helped others with preparation for competitions, examinations and school performances and have enjoyed being on a music teachers’ committee. Examinations can be a motivating factor in learning and my students have enjoyed much success in this regard (Royal Schools of Music), but this is not a mandatory route.
I believe that learning musical theory should not necessarily be an end in itself, but that it is invaluable for enabling understanding of how music works and accordingly am experienced in teaching this aspect of musical learning.

Tutoring Approach:

People learn an instrument for various reasons. You may wish to give your child an opportunity to learn to play and understand music and benefit from the learning development that is part of the process. The aim may be examination achievements, to improve confidence in playing, or to gain the skills and technique to enjoy making music. You may be wanting to take up learning simply because you wished you had but never did. You are never too old, so give it try.
A student will learn through a carefully planned programme, adapted to their individual needs. This will encompass technique, aural and rhythm training, and theory. I believe in communicating regularly with the parents/caregivers of younger students, as your support is essential and you are welcome to be present during lessons. The genre is generic for beginners, classical and light jazz.
Music is everywhere and we understand how music works and experience it’s richness more fully if we have had some instrumental learning. The aim is to enjoy learning.
