This is how 2 referees rated Ros:
I attended he Royal College of Music studying piano as my main instrument. I am married with three children and now four grand children. I am now retired.
I have taught in schools for many years, teaching music to years 7-13, preparing students for GCSE and A level Music and university and music college entrance. I was then an AST in music, helping other schools with their music departments and then went on to be Head of the Music Service in Southend On Sea.
I now teach piano, which I have done throughout my teaching carrer.
Previously I taught in the conventional way, preparing children for grade exams and still am very happy to do that.
However, two years ago i received training to teach Suzuki piano and have now gained considerable experience with this new approach. Basically the idea is that a child can learn an instrument in the same way as learning a language; they listen and hear the language spoken and gradually start to speak. As they are encouraged they add to their vocabulary. Parents are vital in the process and therefore attend lessons. When the child learns an instrment the same approach applies; they listen and then play, which can considerably accellerate their learning and ability to play really well. They learn to read music later as a separate skill ; this particularly applies if the child starts to learn at the age of 3 or 4.
I am very happy to teach this method from this very early age but am fully aware that the recognised route is via the ABRSM exams My experience in the Suzuki approach has strengthened my resolve to bring out the best in every child whatever approach the parents choose to adopt. Continued communication with parents is really important throughout the process and I am most happy to discuss this with parents to find the absolute best approach for their child.
