Personal Description:

I play the piano, keyboard, all types of recorder and the bassoon. Piano and singing were my first "instruments" but I had extensive experience of playing in orchestras in my teens and early twenties even though bassoon was my "third instrument". After studying music at Bristol University and qualifying as a teacher at Reading University, I taught in Secondary schools for 15+ years and gained considerable experience as a conductor of vocal music, and large-scale choral/orchestral works - for groups of adults and young people. I also conducted a choir I had founded on a commercially produced CD by the composer June Boyce-Tillman. After moving to the London area I sang with the London Philharmonic Choir for a period before teaching commitments took over! Since 2010 I have focused mainly on my private piano students, as well as developing small-group keyboard teaching for schools. I don't advertise and only rarely have spaces as most of my students come to me by personal recommendation. Many of my students have studied with me for years, and continue having lessons up to the end of sixth form.

Tutoring Experience:

As well as teaching piano, keyboards and theory, (and occasionally bassoon) privately, I have also taught class music for more than 17 years in Secondary Schools, and been a Head of Music in several schools. I have successfully prepared many students for GCSE and A-level Music and I am always happy to help my piano students with composition and listening/analysis aspects of the subject, as well as the performing aspect.
I enter students for ABRSM, Trinity and (more recently) some Rockschool exams.
I have occasional adult students, as well as teaching students of all ages from 5/6 years to 18

Tutoring Approach:

I was originally classically-trained both in piano/singing and in academic music so I teach classical piano to Grade 8 level. However I have also developed an interest in jazz, improvisation and rock/pop use of piano since I started teaching in 1992 and I am more than happy to incorporate these aspects into lessons where pupils and parents want this.
Some of my pupils take exams, some do not - that is a personal choice for students, and parents (where applicable).

Unless they have a piano at home already, I usually start pupils younger than 8 on the keyboard - they get a faster sense of progression in the early months of learning and the initial financial commitment for parents is less (if they do not already own a piano). Children fortunate enough to have a piano at home when they start, can obviously start with piano lessons from the outset.

I encourage pupils to explore music they already like as well as challenging them to try styles or pieces of music which are unfamiliar to them. In piano/keyboard lessons most of the theory is taught informally through playing and discussing what we are playing up to about Grade 3 level, but formal theory training - eg preparation for theory exams - is also available within piano/keyboard lessons for older students OR as a separate lesson, if requested.
