Personal Description:

Hello, my name is Rory and I am a teacher, pianist, and writer.

I have a Master of Music degree in Piano Performance from the Royal Northern College of Music. I am an accompanist at the University of Manchester, and have over a dozen years of teaching experience.

I teach a broad range of ages and abilities: my students are between the ages of four and sixty, from beginner to professional level. I also have lectured in harmony and musicianship at the University of Manchester.

As a cellist, I was section leader of each orchestra I attended, and I have sang with the Charles Wood Singers, Queen's University Chamber Choir, and conducted the Queen's University Music Society Choir. I am also trained in First Aid.

Please take a look at my biography, or visit my site and social media page for more information. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

I look forward to meeting you!

Tutoring Experience:

Belfast-born pianist Rory is a Master of Music graduate of the Royal Northern College of Music, and a First-Class Bachelor of Music graduate of Queen’s University, Belfast, where he achieved the highest mark in his year. Rory studied piano under Dr. Murray McLachlan at the Royal Northern College of Music, and under Dr. Peter Tuite at the Royal Irish Academy of Music.

He has performed in the UK and Ireland as both a soloist and accompanist, and won a number of competitions, including the Joan Gavin Cup and Dina Copeman Cup at the Royal Irish Academy of Music. He has also received masterclasses from pianists including Peter Donohoe, Leon Fleisher, Peter Hill, Stephen Hough, and Fanny Waterman.

After the publication of his article, ‘Beethoven’s WoO 47 Piano Sonatas: Worthless or Invaluable?’ in Piano Professional Magazine in 2012, Rory was awarded a scholarship from the Arts and Humanities Research Council from the Royal Northern College of Music. He was awarded ‘Highly Commended in the Recognition of Academic Excellence’ by The Undergraduate Awards of Ireland and Northern Ireland in 2011 and 2012.

With a decade of teaching experience, Rory has taught piano and theory to a broad range of pupils with different ages and abilities, from beginners to diploma standard, aged approximately four to sixty. Many of his students have achieved distinction level in both examinations and competitions. Rory has also taught courses on classical analysis, aural skills, and musicianship skills to undergraduate students at the University of Manchester.

Tutoring Approach:

Our lessons will involve working through pieces in a range of styles. We'll also work on exercises and sight-reading with a fun and well-considered approach. Whilst I encourage exams - they are a useful goal to work towards and provide opportunity for feedback - they are not compulsory. Each student requires a different approach, and we will work together to find the best approach for you.
