Personal Description:

I am 33 years old and have recently moved from Tyneside to Stanhope, County Durham, with my wife and step children. Music is my main passion and I enjoy singing and song writing, recording and performing all kinds of material both solo and in a band. A lot of my experience as a performer has been in the world of popular music, having filled various roles in various bands, including: piano/keyboard, guitar, bass guitar and lead vocal. As a musician, however, it is also useful (and fun) to be able to adapt to different genres. Whilst at university I received first class training in jazz piano and focused solely on this skill for one year of my degree at the Conservatorio di Parma in Italy. As well as this, a thorough grounding in music theory and studying of a variety of musical genres, including classical music, has allowed me to develop into an all-round musician with the skills and knowledge to adapt to a range of circumstances.
Ensuring music is enjoyed by all and that musicians are valued properly for their work is essential. This is why I am a member of the Musicians' Union, where I was elected to the northern regional committee in 2017. I continue to sit on this committee and work on a number of the issues musicians face today.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe it is important to develop a range of skills and techniques for learning, including: reading staff notation, reading other forms of notation such as guitar and bass tablature (tab), improvising and learning by ear. It is also important to develop different playing techniques such as finger picking and using a plectrum on guitar, for example. My approach would be to cover all of these skills in the long term by focusing, for an appropriate length of time, on a piece or pieces that require a particular method of learning and a particular playing technique before moving on, eventually, to focus on pieces that require a different learning method and playing technique and so on. Over time, ideally, learners will develop a range of skills. Having said that, every musician is different and some may find they have a particular strength or passion for one thing or another. My approach to music tuition is ultimately guided by how much attention learners give to different aspects of their learning from lesson to lesson, at home.
I am also very happy to help learners play music of their own choice, so long as they have the appropriate level of skill to approach it. If not, I would provide relevant material for learners to practice that will develop the specific skills needed to play whatever music they may have chosen themselves. In these situations, it is important that learners understand they will have to practise material they may not have chosen themselves for as long as it takes for them to develop the appropriate level of skill required to approach music they have chosen themselves.
