Personal Description:

Originally from Scotland, I moved down to London in 2014 to study my masters degree and have stayed here to work and live since graduating in 2015. I work and live in the Blackheath/Greenwich area and also gig around London on a semi-regular basis. Whilst I studied classical music degrees, I am very interested in modern and alternative/world styles of music. I am a relaxed, easy going individual in general but also like to keep active, and enjoy discovering new music.

Tutoring Experience:

Between my degrees, I took a year to teach and work in my home area of Fife, Scotland. In this time, I worked as a visiting instrumental teacher in high schools giving weekly lessons to students aged 12-17; as a samba drumming instructor for classes of primary children aged 7-11; and as a private music teacher conducting lessons from my home. Further to this, whilst my degrees both had a focus on musical performance, there was also a secondary interest and exploration of teaching method.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe in enjoying what we do with music and that it should go past technique and scales so that we can truly appreciate it. I am very patient and usually take quite a calm approach to teaching to create a comfortable environment for the pupil without too much pressure. However, I am quite driven and like to motivate my students to work hard, as I feel that learning music is about learning discipline as well as exploring creativity. I believe focusing on these elements can in turn improve other aspects of study and life. Every person is different and has something unique to take from exploring music, and each deserves to have their experience tailored to suit, which is something I strive for.
