Personal Description:
I am an experienced, friendly, and patient teacher and historical keyboard specialist based in Muswell Hill. I have been an organist and choral conductor for over ten years and recently held the post of Director of Music at St John the Evangelist Palmers Green where I conducted the choir and trained the Organ Scholar in organ technique and church musicianship. I have a full and up-to-date DBS certificate and have received safeguarding and disability support training within the last two years.
I studied piano with international concert pianist Caroline Clemmow, organ with Alan Phillips, improvisation with Neil Wright (Farnborough Abbey) and harpsichord with Alan Cuckston. I undertook my organ scholarship at St Thomas of Canterbury Brentwood.
As a teenager I was a Runner-up Cathcart Young Composer of the Year and served as the Conductor of Barrow Silver Band from age sixteen to eighteen. Throughout my twenties I honed my skills as an organist and choral conducted through a series of posts at London parish churches. I currently have a lively schedule of freelance work as an accompanist and as a choral bass I sing in London's leading concert venues. Most recently I sang in Mahler's Second Symphony at Blackheath Halls, and at the Royal Festival Hall in the revival of Charles Parry's 'Judith' as part of the London English Song Festival, as well as for the recording of the work released by Chandos.
My compositions have been performed at the London Festival of Contemporary Church Music at St Bride's Fleet Street, St John of Jerusalem South Hackney, at Pleasance One as part of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, and at Fairfield Halls in Croyden.
Tutoring Experience:
I have over fifteen years experience teaching both in schools and privately, having started tutoring younger students in music theory and the piano whilst still at school, and going on to become a peripatetic music teacher with North Lincolnshire Council. I have since worked with numerous young and older pianists, organists, singers and electronic keyboardists from absolute beginner level to Grade 8 and beyond, cultivating excellence in technique and rigorous musicianship. In addition to my work as a private teacher I am a teacher of piano, organ, theory and voice at the New London Performing Arts Centre.
"I was looking for a new piano teacher for my daughter who was struggling to stay motivated with her practice. Since starting with Robert I have been delighted with her progress and I now struggle to get her away from the piano. She really looks forward to her weekly lesson and comes away feeling inspired and positive. I can't recommend him highly enough." - Jenny, Winchmore Hill
Tutoring Approach:
I believe that musical talent is not something you are born with but can be cultivated through good tuition and practice. I take an analytic and holistic approach to teaching that helps students to develop a framework for understanding music whilst cultivating essential practice skills to ensure they are able to make thorough progress quickly. I am a supportive and adaptive teacher and I tailor my teaching style to the strengths of my individual students. I integrate historical context, style and theory of music into my practical tuition to allow my students to develop their general musicianship as well as technical proficiency.
LOCATIONS
I am able to travel only to Students in the Muswell Hill, Bounds Green and Crouch End areas.

I've been to both places where he teaches - at Seven Sisters with the harpsichord and in the church at Palmers Green. I also had an opportunity to sing in his choir (which is lovely!) and meet his organ scholars.
Highly recommended! :)
