Personal Description:

I began to learn the baritone (a sort of tiny tuba) at the age of 6. Much of my early learning was done within the young peoples band of the Salvation Army. By the age of 10 I had progressed on to the euphonium and during the following years, alongside Salvation Army commitments, I also worked with numerous brass bands in the north west of England playing solo euphonium both home and abroad. At the age of 11 I began studying classical piano under 2 concert pianists – Stephen Hopwood and Sally-Ann Bottomley (now McLeod). Sally-Ann is a current lecturer with the Royal Northern College of Music.

My music however, has not been restricted to classical and brass. I have also been a member of several rock and pop groups playing keyboards or bass guitar. On a separate tangent, I have also worked as Musical Director for a number of amateur and semi-professional dramatics societies where I enjoyed bringing together orchestras and actors for productions such as The King and I, Hello Dolly and My Fair Lady as well as numerous pantos.

Whilst teaching is my main vocation I also enjoy furthering my own skills as a musician and composer at home where I have a fully equipped recording studio. Currently I am working towards the higher diplomas in classical piano and music theory.

After an absence of many years I have recently rejoined the brass band world and am now principle euphonium with both Hunmamby Silver and Driffield Silver bands. I'm also band master of Driffield.

Tutoring Experience:

I began teaching Piano in 1996 and for many years was based in and taught around Oldham, north Manchester. Life sometimes takes interesting turns and in 2011, having met my now wife, I relocated to Filey on the east Yorkshire coast. Though it takes time to build a business from scratch I am pleased to say that the school soon got off the ground and has gone from strength to strength.

Although I have primarily taught within the confines of my own school, while in Oldham I periodically taught for Oldham College of Technology (as it was at that time) and since moving to Filey I have done a limited amount of teaching for Scarborough college.

I have an excellent success rate with all the instruments I teach. Though I tend not to take Flute and Saxophone students beyond grade 5 as my own experience is less extensive I have had success with all the instruments I teach to advanced levels with piano and brass students achieving grade 8.

Tutoring Approach:

I am happy to teach students of any age from 5 to 95 and indeed currently my youngest is 6 while I have a number of more senior students. I offer a first lesson free as a trial and then lessons are £16 for 30 mins or £30 for the hour. I've always worked predominantly on a mobile basis, I have found travelling to students homes saves students a lot of time on busy evenings with the added bonus that familiar surroundings help to mitigate the nerves of playing in front of a teacher. That said understandably in person lessons are perhaps not as desirable as once they were. As the law allows I do intend to return to in person teaching for those happy to do so but I've also developed an online setup facilitating continued learning when circumstances prevent or for those less comfortable with the idea. Where in person lessons are appropriate areas I cover include but are not limited to :- Scarborough, Filey, Bridlington and Driffield. Where lessons are only ever going to remain within the virtual world there really is no limit, though perhaps not too many time zones away might be a plan. :-)

Thanks for taking the time to read a little about me. Good luck with your musical aspirations in the future.
Rob.
