Information About Richard - Canterbury teacher
This is how 2 referees rated Richard:
I have recently started offering private piano tuition after a lifetime of music teaching in schools and life as a performing and recording musician. I studied music at Clare College Cambridge, specialising in Composition, Harmony, Piano and Organ. My teachers included John Tavener, John Rutter, Robin Holloway and Gillian Weir. I teach in Chartham with my own Schimmel Piano but am happy to teach at your home within a radius of 2 miles, or further afield for a small supplement. Currently I am a touring musician playing with Tribute bands around the country but am regularly at home during the day and evenings to teach.
I have several pupils at the moment at a variety of levels, but I also teach in a London school and have been a Head of Music in the past, fully up to date with the requirements of the music curriculum. I have also taught piano at schools in Dover and Music Theatre in a stage school in Chatham. I have taught students from the age of 6 to adult and adapt my style and expectations to each individual pupil.
I am skilled in both classical and rock styles, but my preference is to teach traditionally using music notation alongside piano technique so the student has the most full and grounded music experience which is transferrable to other musical areas. I supplement this with ear training, improvisation and chord work. I like to be able to prepare more advanced students for the ABRSM musical exams, and have had much success with past pupils. In addition to piano teaching I can also offer theory and harmony (4-part and counterpoint) to a high level.
