I'm originally from Sevenoaks, Kent, but lived as an expat in the Far East (Taiwan) for 25 years. In Taiwan, I taught piano, and regularly performed piano recitals at venues in the capital, Taiwan and elsewhere on the island. Now settled back in the UK, I live in Swindon, Wiltshire, where I continue to teach piano and music theory.
I've had 20 years experience teaching piano in Taiwan to both expats and Taiwanese, both children (from the age of 6) and adults, and just relocated back to the UK. I accept beginner to advanced, and I'm experienced in taking students through ABRSM piano exams (the prep test and grades 1 - 8, and the dreaded theory grade 5).
For more advanced students, I have a particular interest in late Romantic and early twentieth century music.
I teach in students' homes if a reasonable distance from me (I live in north Swindon, Redhouse village), or students are welcome to come to me. Although I presently have only a digital piano.
I take a relaxed, friendly approach to teaching, with the aim of instilling an interest in music and an ability to be an expressive player, rather than merely a technically proficient one, although naturally I do pay close attention to technical development. For young learners I often use popular/jazzy piano (Martha Mier/ Christopher Norton et al) to keep young learners engaged and hopefully practicing!
