Information About Richard - Cannock teacher

Hi, I'm Richard and I teach guitar from beginner level up to lower advanced (Grade 5).
I'm a passionate and long-time electric and acoustic guitar player. I have a Grade 4 qualification in Electric Guitar with Distinction from Rockschool, and I am due to take the Grade 5 exam this November. I am a big alternative rock fan - anything from Hendrix and James Taylor to Johnny Marr and grunge. I like to play a wide range of music styles - blues rock, folk fingerpicking, Jazz, Samba Rock - up to an intermediate level. I'm also interested in music theory and composing my own guitar music.
I can help you learn basic and more advanced guitar playing techniques, from strumming chords and playing single-note melody to riffing with double-stops, hammer ons/pull offs, string bends and vibrato, as well as fingerpicking. Equally, I can help you explore particular playing styles that interest you, such as rock, blues or country. I can also assist you with learning to tune and service your guitar to improve its playability and sound. In terms of music theory, I can teach you about scales, harmonisation and reading sheet music.
Currently, I work as an Online English Tutor, helping international students aged 5 to 15 improve their English language skills. I love to study, perform and teach guitar music and would love to share my knowledge and passion with students of all ages.
Please note that I have a clean DBS check dated July 2021, which you are very welcome to see.
For the past three years, I have worked as an Online English Tutor with children aged 5 to 15; previously, I worked as a Teaching Assistant and a Lecturer at Walsall College (in Health and Social Care not music); and before that, I taught and assessed social work students in the workplace at Dudley Council.
In my Teaching Assistant role, I supported the learning of 16 to 18-year olds with learning difficulties and autism.
My guitar lessons are structured, purposeful and teach a mix of playing techniques, music theory and songs to perform.
For example, a typical lesson covers:
- scale practice;
- one or two specific playing techniques (e.g. barre chords, power chords, alternate picking, string bends, double stops, hammer ons/pull offs, fingerpicking);
- learning a song;
- relevant music theory.
I believe that good music tuition should be structured and taught in manageable, incremental chunks, with regular review of a student's understanding and technique to address any difficulties. It should be based around a student's music taste, whether they prefer a certain style of music (pop, rock, metal) or a particular playing technique (fingerpicking, blues licks). A good music teacher has excellent communication skills, is very patient, gives lots of praise and makes learning fun but challenging too.
Please note that my tuition sessions are 50 minutes in duration, not a full hour, at a cost of £14.00.
